The USS ORLECK (DD 886) arrived in Jacksonville in the spring of 2022 to become the centerpiece of the Jacksonville Naval Historical
Museum. You can learn about the ship’s long and storied history at www.jaxnavalmuseum.org.

The ship was freshly painted on the exterior and looked very nice from the pier. Inside however, years of neglect had left quite a mess and
volunteers quickly set about cleaning, painting, etc. in order to get the ship presentable for public visitation.

In the summer of 2022 Lee & Lenore decided to sponsor the ship’s barber shop. In addition to a significant financial commitment restoring the barber shop to what it would have looked like in the late 1960s required a lot of elbow grease. The overhead and upper parts of the bulkheads
needed to be scraped, sanded and prepared for spray painting. Lee did most of this work but had a welcome assist fro his older daughter, Michelle, one
weekend when her family was visiting. The spray painting was done by hand with numerous cans of spray paint.

After some research it was decided not to replace the deck tile but instead to paint it as is. This was done by Taylor Shaw, the ship’s girl Friday”.

Lee obtained some Vietnam era USO posters for decoration and donated used clippers, shears, combs, etc. One of the other volunteers dropped off a box of vintage shaving supplies, talc, pomade to add to the authenticity of the space. Thanks to a lot of effort the barber shop was essentially
restored in time for the opening of the ship to the general public in the fall of 2022.

From 2001-2015 Lee chaired the organizing committee for Kutting for Kids, a city-wide cut-a-thon to collect hair donations for Locks of Love. He felt that the ship would be a good venue to bring that event back and with the full support of the museum’s board of directors it happened on Sunday, 25 June 2023. With the blessing of Locks of Love the event was structured to be a fund raiser for the ship in addition to collecting hair for Locks of Love.

Thanks to incredible support from hair donors, corporate sponsors (particularly World Wide Automotive of Middleburg) and matching funds from benefactors who wish to remain anonymous the event raised $16,780.00 to be used for the restoration of berthing and living spaces so that youth groups can experience
an overnight stay onboard. Kutting for Kids will now be an annual event aboard the ORLECK. The next event will be held in the spring of 2024.

Lee’s has three goals for 2024. One is to open the barber shop one morning a month to provide complimentary haircuts to the ship’s volunteers. The second is to develop a cadre of volunteer barbers and cosmetologists who would be willing to open the barber shop on a Sunday afternoon to provide free haircuts to ship’s visitors. Those who wish to document their haircut could purchase a certificate in the ship’s store. The third is to obtain a functional, period authentic (1960s) barber chair for the shop.

Barbers and cosmetologists who would like to become ship’s
barbers should contact Lee by email (Lee@HairByLee.com)
or by phone at (904) 264-2244.
